Another Great Visit Come and Gone!...

Well I tried hard, but I couldn't come up with anything new and embarrassing for the arrival of my cousin and her husband Chris. Which really works out great considering I was a tad bit late picking them up.  So instead of jumping up and down and forcing Chris into a great big hug after they pass security, I slide in silently up to Erin as they wait for their baggage.  My reason for being late was picking up a few groceries and then cleaning the car up in the airport parking lot to make it some what presentable for my guests.  In my defense I was going to do it the night before, but I was forced to go out to dinner!!
So after the hugs and the arrival of their suitcase we head back to Bardstown.  As we make our way back to the car and since it is still early, I suggest we stop off at Jim Beam's so they can get started on their Bourbon education.  We make it just in time to catch the latter half of the tour.  We missed the tour of the house and the video on the history of Jim Beam, but we were lucky enough to get in with a good tour guide who made the rest of the tour really enjoyable.  I learned that my cousin Erin has enjoyed one of Jim Beam's strongest bourbons.  A fact the tour guide also thought quite impressive.  From that point on the rest of the group looked at her with a sort of awe and fear of her ability to toss back such alcohol.   After our bourbon tastings and chocolate we continued on our way to Bardstown.

Once we were settled and after a cocktail we decided on a casual dinner with a little local colour.  So we walked over to Mammy's Kitchen for some deep fried pickles, deep fried green tomatoes and bourbon burgers.  Once we got there I decided on a bourbon dog instead and Chris went for the bourbon chicken sandwich.  Erin had the catfish sandwich....I think.

First deep fried pickle ever!!

Erin thinks that this is Chris's sultry look.....not a description I would volunteer up.  However he almost smiled, which I thought encouraging.

Erin noticed pimento cheese on a few of the sandwich descriptions and wanted to know what it tasted like so our lovely waitress brought her out a small sample with a few crackers.  I tasted it too...not bad.  Cream cheese based with a wee kick to it.

After dinner we decided to go on a little tour so they could see a little of Bardstown and we could work off some of the fried food we just consumed.

We had just toured the little replica of a civil war village and were escaping out the back.

This was us walking of the oldest paved road in KY.

After our walk we went home to enjoy some bourbon before we headed off to bed.  Which was around 10pm for us old fogies!  Really we just needed our sleep since we were heading to Zappo's first thing in the morning.

Erin was the first one up on Friday and had the coffee ready for us.  I then introduced them to the awesome Pillsbury Honey Butter Biscuits for our breakfast.  They are heavenly.  I just found out that they come in two different sizes and I had been buying the junior size....up until now.

Our bellies full and with our energy high off to Zappo's we go.  Not to be disappointed we each found something to leave with. Erin was successful with finding the black pumps she needed along with a great pair of boots to wear with her skinny jeans and I can't remember the third pair.  Chris found a Swiss Army carry-on luggage bag and I found a pair of black shoes I needed for work....along with a completely un-necessary pair of beige suede flats.  But I think I have proven that necessary is not important when it comes to shoes.  As long as, they make you happy
Chris's only request of the trip was to go to Target.  So that was our next stop of the day.  He was on the hunt for an item (CHILD'S TOY) that I guess he could only find at Target.  Before we made it to Target we stopped for lunch at Big Boy to refuel. Chris later stated that the grilled ham and cheese sandwich was one of the highlights of the trip for him.  It really is the simple things in life.  On our way to Target I found out that both Erin and Chris had never....EVER....been to a Target.  EVER....I was honoured to be the one to introduce them to the big red dot.

Erin and Chris in front of the Target.

This is Karen.  She noticed that I was taking their picture and kind of gave us a weird look.  We explained that this was their first Target trip ever and she graciously welcomed them both with handshakes.  Karen was very funny and nice so I had to get her picture.  I think Erin is even going to write to Target to tell them how great she was. This was also my first visit to Target where I didn't buy a damn thing.  Felt so wrong.

After our shopping trip and grabbing a Starbucks beverage we headed to my next favourite place, The Book Store. That was more successful for me. Two new books at half price and 50 cent magazines, I was a very happy camper.

Instead of eating out for dinner, Erin volunteered to make it for us back at the apartment.  Not one to turn down someone else cooking, I readily agreed.....especially knowing Erin's cooking.  We made a pit stop at Kroger's before we got to the apartment.  Erin located some steaks, spinach, garlic, olive oil and potatoes for her to create her masterpiece with.  Chris headed in another direction looking for pretzel Combos and Sprite and I went in search of some pimento cheese for us to snack on before dinner.  Then we headed next door to find wine to go with dinner and for Chris to locate some vodka and vermouth to crush his martini craving.

The table all dressed up for dinner. This was the first time in 6 months that I actually ate dinner at it.

The masterpiece! Steak strips over sauteed spinach with garlic and caramelized onions.  Blue cheese sprinkled on top and roast potatoes on the side.  Soooooooooooo good.  She seared the steak on the George Forman grill and then finished it off in the oven.  She is like a kitchen "MacIyver".  I probably should have taken notes.  She also showed me where the light and the fan to the stove was.  It was on the microwave. Hunh...who would have thought of that.

Dinner Time!

After dinner was consumed and Chris and I did the dishes, we retired to the living room for more bourbon and for Chris to enjoy his Hostess Cupcakes that he picked up at Krogers.  We planned to go to the Buffalo Trace distillery the next day. That was Erin's request since it is one of her favourite bourbons.  So as we were enjoying our cocktails I decided to google other activities going on around Kentucky that we could possibly do as well.  I came across the Chicken Festival happening in London Kentucky.  London, unfortunately was an hour and a half away, but it got Erin thinking of Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Colonel and where he would be buried.  I assumed it was in London, considering that was were the festival was being held, but when I googled further I found out it was in Louisville.  There were quite a few websites of people discussing their visits to the Colonel's grave site and the pictures they took with his bust! So we decided it would be a good, Americana, Kentucky kind of thing that we should definitely do.

We were up in good time to get in all our fun, but unfortunately the day started with a lot of rain.  Not fun when you are circling a cemetery trying to find a Legend's grave site.  I guess I could have researched the exact location of the man's grave, but no one imagined the cemetery was going to be as big as it was!  You would also think that his grave site would be in a special area and all decked out. I knew from the pictures on the internet that there was his bust and some Roman looking columns, but you can't believe how many grave sites in there had Roman looking columns!  Bigger...way bigger than the Colonel's turned out to be.  We went round and round looking for his grave site with no luck. Finally feeling foolish, we gave up....and just as we gave up and tried to find our way out Erin spotted his grave site.  It also didn't hurt that there were other people there taking pictures.  They left and we pulled up and started taking our pictures.  I couldn't get Chris to pose with the bust though!
Colonel Harland Sanders

Die hard Colonel fans leaving roses for the big man.

This is a really good picture of these two....if we just crop out the dead man's bust and grave site.

After our morbid fascination with the colonel we hightailed it as fast as we could out of the cemetery and made our way to the Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, KY.  We made it in enough time for the 1:00 tour and we had just enough time to spare so we could grab a bite to eat at the Firehouse Cafe.  The pulled pork sandwiches were pretty good and really hit the spot.

Our tour guide's name was Don and he was a retired teacher who loved to talk. The tour was only supposed to last an hour, but we got the extended version of an hour and a half.  It wasn't my favourite tour, but I think that had to do with the people attending the tour with us.  Lots of talkers!  I did learn that Buffalo Trace is the oldest, continuously running bourbon distillery.  Buffalo Trace was given permission to run during prohibition to make Bourbon available to those with a written prescription from their doctor's.  You could only get a new bottle of bourbon every two weeks.

The Firehouse Cafe!  Get the pulled pork sandwich made with bourbon bbq sauce served on an onion bun.  Yummy.

Look at all those barrels!  First time I have seen brick ricket houses.
Just smell the bourbon.

You will notice at the top of this ricket house there are new brick. A couple of years ago a tornado went straight down this lane way clearing the brick from the top. Fear not however, none of the contents inside the building were affected.

The visitor's center bathed in Angel Share!

This was new for me to see.  I had never seen the bottling operation. Most of it is done by automation, but a few bottles require packaging by hand.

Some of the fine Buffalo Trace product.

Labeling operation.

I believe this is the Blanton's Bourbon.  On top of the cap is a metal figurine of a jockey on a racing horse.  He puts this paper bib around the bottom of the cap to cover the bottle for the black wax that the machines applies.
Erin making new friends!

We made it back to the apartment to discover that Bubba had been in the garbage....most specifically the pimento cheese I had to throw out the night before because he helped himself to it when I left the room.  I had forgotten to barricade the garbage before we left.  Let's just say the pimento in the pimento cheese digests in dogs like corn!  It doesn't.  I hope his fiery bum will make him think twice before he dives into the garbage again.

We had some time to burn (no pun intended. bawahaha) before our dinner reservations next door, so Chris took a nap, Erin went for a walk through town and I took the pooch out to relieve himself.  Erin said they wanted to take my out for dinner for my birthday, so when I told her about the restaurant that is beside my apartment she made reservations the next day.  Circa opened up here in Bardstown back in March and has been touted as the best restaurant in town.  We were not disappointed.

Appetizers.

Erin's Chicken and Waffles.

Chris's Shrimp...something something.

My Flat bead with Tomato Jam and feta....I think.  I should really write this stuff down at the time!

Erin's first Mint Julep!!  Chris had one too.  They like.

My dinner.  Steak with blue cheese and pistachio topping. Very...very good.

I almost wish I had Erin's dinner. Short ribs that were so tender, they were amazing.

Chris had rabbit......he said it was great.  That is all I am going to say about that. (I don't like)

This is my happy food face.  I had it a lot this weekend.

We were so happy and full that we couldn't even eat dessert.  We headed home to digest and to drink some bourbon to aid in that digestion.

Sadly my guests had to leave the next day and we had to be at the airport for 11.  I wish they could have stayed longer. It was such a great visit and I really enjoyed my time with them. Especially getting the chance to catch up on their lives over the last two years since I saw them last and learning all about how well their girls Riley and Paige are doing!  They can come back any time!

Birthday Dinner!

Last night my co-workers took me out to dinner for my birthday.  We actually planned to go out last week during the Bourbon festival, but when you leave planning outings to my boss something always goes wrong.  Even last night getting the group together he told Serena we were going to the El Jimador and the rest of us BJ's.  (Yes BJ's.....makes my boss snicker like a little girl when he says it and that is worth the name alone!)  It was very nice to be out with the group. Serena brought her husband and daughter and that always adds some energy to the evening.  After dinner Serena and family went home and Tina, Amir and I went to the bar side for a birthday drink.  A likely excuse for Amir to have some Bourbon.  Last night we had Buffalo Trace Bourbon.  (In honour of my cousin Erin's visit today!!)  It was quite nice.  We were entertained by some of the waiters drinking at the bar after their shift and of course talked about work. (hard not to do with those two.) The bartender heard we were drinking for my birthday so she gave me a shooter that she had invented but had no name for.  I think there was bourbon, some Cinnamon alcohol, grapefruit juice...I think and something else.  It was actually pretty good....better than it sounds.  I took some pictures..mostly because our waiter was entertaining.

Our waiter....didn't think to ask him his name.

Tina, nameless waiter, MOI and Amir (bossman)

Our bartender and drink inventor.

So now I must get busy and clean.  I have visitors coming and I am very excited.  My cousin Erin and her husband Chris will be arriving this afternoon.  I am trying to think of ways to make their arrival special....and embarrassing but I've got nothing so far.  Maybe lots of hugs for Chris.  I know how much he will love that! Bwahahahaha...ha.

Birthday Weekend.

Well, we are back into the swings of things here in Kentucky! It was a nice quiet weekend after the craziness of our trip home.  My birthday was uneventful.  However, Bubba did surprise me with a little gift under my pillow.  So very thoughtful....

Who doesn't want to find this under her pillow?

My Aunt Sandi called from Saskatchewan to wish me a happy birthday, as well as my friend Sue.  On Saturday I hit E-town for a little birthday retail therapy....always a pleasure and on Sunday it was more chilling with Bubba along with some laundry.  I decided to get adventurous and make myself a quiche for dinner.  You wouldn't think it would be that easy to screw up....well apparently I am here to prove you wrong.  It was either the fact I used non-fat half and half instead of full strength...or that I substituted the zucchini with green pepper....or the length of baking time was originally incorrect. The 30 minutes it states turned out to be about an hour...and then I don't think I completely baked the little devil enough...I haven't tried it yet. Below is what it looks like.  I don't think it looks right.

So deciding that this was a bit of a failure I made something a little safer.

Salad with Buffalo chicken fingers....

...and a little vino that my neighbour gave me.

Back to Bardstown.

Up at 4:30 and on the road an hour later.  Seven and half hours from then, we arrive in Bardstown, Kentucky!  Me tired.

My "vacation" comes to an end.

Well it has been memorable...sadly.
There were ups, there were downs and there was a lot of smoke.
I saw Keith Urban, met some dreamy firemen and rescued a dog.
Visited with good friends, ate some good food and surprising didn't drink a lot.
Spent money on new brakes, two new tires and a couple of new shirts.
I went to work, I went for walks and I went a little crazy.

I look forward to going back to KY for a rest!

Can I just say....

...that ADT is a wonderful investment and I highly recommend it for those times when you are a completely scattered MORON that leaves toast in your toaster over then walks over to your neighbour's house while it burns to charcoal and completely fills your house with smoke while your cat and dog are inside!!!

ONLY to be the idiot sitting at your neighbour's dining room table when the paramedics in full lights and siren arrive closely followed by the fire department all decked out in their fire fighting finest!  THERE really is no better feeling in the world to have them carry out the nasty toast burning culprit and place it in your front yard for all to see.
(You are probably wondering why I didn't hear the alarm in my house going off, but some other moron on the street was cutting his lawn at 8:30 at night!)

I would like to say a very humble THANK YOU to my very lovely friend Terri (and my "in case of an emergency" contact) who had the beejeesus scared out of her when she received a phone call from ADT telling her that her friend's house might be on fire with her trapped inside it and that fire rescue and the paramedics are on scene! Creating such panic in Terri (because she is a very caring, loving friend) that she jumped in her husband's truck and beat it over to her friend's house when all she wanted to do is sleep since she was at work at 3:30am that morning and had to be at work at 3:30am the following day!  (Not sure that there is a Hallmark card to really cover how bad I feel and how sorry I am.)

So to recap....
1. ADT really good investment.
2. Men in uniform are really hot.
3. Toaster ovens will never be allowed in my house EVER again.
4. Terri is a really AWESOME friend that I really don't deserve
5. Julie a complete MORON!

Keith Urban gives good Concert

For my birthday I was treated to Keith Urban's concert in London.  It was an awesome gift from Nancy Yeadon!  We met at the hotel, had a fantastic dinner at an Italian restaurant a couple of doors down from the hotel and then off to the concert.  All I have to say is WOW!  I am not sure what I expected from a Keith Urban concert, but that was better than I could have imagined.  He is really pretty.....AND he can really sing....AND he can really play the guitar!  The concert started at 7:30.  The band Perry was the opening act.  They played for 1/2 an hour and were really good. Then there was a wee intermission while they got the stage ready for Keith. He played continuously for over 2 hours!  And then he came back out for an encore!!. He really interacts with the audience too.  He brings them on stage, goes out into the audience to play and then at the end he gave a lucky girl one of his guitars!!  The poor guy needs a few bodyguards when he goes out into the audience because he keeps getting jumped...and he is not a really big guy.  At the end he thanked the audience for choosing his concert to attend over others in this time where the economy is tough and spending money on tickets is a big deal.  We thought it was nice that he acknowledged that.  I have a few pictures below to share of the concert.....you can vaguely make Keith out!

The band at the end of the concert.

The band saying thank you.

Keith saying thank you.

The band Perry!

Keith singing to us...yes just us!

Hanging out with the crowd!

I am not a huge country fan, but I would see him again and highly recommend anyone go see him.  You won't be disappointed.

Hard to believe it has almost been a week at home!!

Saturday night at home on the couch....I've been here before! However, it hasn't been for about 6 months. Yup...still feels the same as it did before!  Oh the joy.

So it has been almost a week since we arrived home from Kentucky for vacation.  A vacation that started with work on the Tuesday and Wednesday in Blenheim. Thursday was home waiting for Union Gas to finally arrive at 6:30pm. (while my Kentucky boss continually emailed me for work.) Friday I went into work again AND dropped the car off to have that thumping noise looked at.  That lovely noise turned out to be my brakes that had to be replaced.  I was also informed that it was imperative I buy 2 new front tires. Apparently bald is bad.  Those go on next Wednesday before I go back to Kentucky.  Gosh I am relaxed.

Last night my vacation finally began with Becky and Mike coming over for dinner.  I slaved for hours to serve roast chicken, ribs that were barbecued to perfection, along with a side of crispy home cut fries.  I even went so far as to package it in lovely matching plastic containers and white boxes.....with Swiss Chalet printed on the side.  Ok!.. so I made the salad.... well I actually forgot to make the salad. However, I was forced to make it when someone complained he wasn't getting a home cooked meal and that something I was serving for dinner should be made from scratch. ( I won't say who......Mike.)

Good Old Swiss Chalet!!  I had to have it at least once before I went home.  It was great.  The company and food.

Today I picked up Terri and we headed to Windsor for another psychic reading. We wanted to compare her reading with the one we had in Louisville.  It was quite different for me...I can't say I found her as good or, as interesting as, the reading in Louisville.  The best thing she told me was that I am going to be meeting the man I will spend the rest of my life with before my birthday next year! (I will get back to you on that one next year.)  But despite the disappointing reading I thought she was a lovely, sweet older lady....with a lovely snaggle tooth!  From there, Terri and I headed to the mall for a late lunch at Moxie's and a little bit of window shopping.

Tomorrow I head to Oakville to see Tanya and hopefully Tawnya too. Then to Mr. Joshua Cooney's 3rd birthday in Acton at his grandparents and finally I will hopefully have a visit with Sue and Bruce as I swing through Guelph on my way home.  (but they don't know that yet!)

Monday is a vet visit for Bubba and his "special" anal gland release issue.  I will also be picking up some Xanex for the kitty and his next car ride. (I wonder if I can get extra of that just in case?) Then I will be waiting for the  utilities guy to come and check the water meter at 1:00 before I head to London to meet up with Nancy to see Mr. Keith Urban in concert.  (Heavy sigh!)

Tuesday is my hair appointment at 3:00!  It is needed desperately.  I have been hacking at my own bangs for a while now and it needs to stop before something bad happens.

Wednesday is back to Kentucky after our 8:00 appointment to get the new tires and pay the huge bill.  We will also be stopping at the vet if "pill-ing" the kitty becomes an issue like last time.  Why one would fight sucking back a Xanex is beyond me....not that I can speak from any kind of experience.  Really!

HOME SWEET HOME!

We made it!....and nobody got hurt. Although if I had let T.C. out of his cage I think Bubba and I would have been goners. It is safe to say that for future car rides it is really best for all, if T.C. is medicated....or if I am medicated.....one or the other.  He actually did alright and he wasn't singing the entire ride.  However, I did have to keep petting him through the bars of his cat carrier to keep him calm.  When I foolishly had to use both hands to drive during the rain storm through Cincinnati I witnessed some kitty rage I had never seen in all his 15 years. Bubba might not be the only pet I have that requires a helmet!

But seven and half hours later we are safe and sound.  The house is still standing, there are no floods in the basement, I have a new fence and I didn't leave anything in the fridge that grew fur! All good.

Bubba happy in his chair.

He is like an old lady sitting on her perch spying on the neighbours.

So happy to be inside and away from people.

I'm handsome.

What T.C.'s doing?

Flowers that were waiting for us when we got home.  T.C. doing a thorough inspection to see if they are edible.

I think I can speak for us all when I say we are happy to be home, and will most likely be going to bed soon....very soon
